Dr. Barry M. Gough Honoured with the 2026 True North Book Prize as a special Lifetime Achievement Award

The Canada History Society is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2026 True North Book Prize as a special Lifetime Achievement Award is Dr. Barry M. Gough, one of Canada’s most distinguished historians and internationally respected scholars of Canadian, maritime, imperial, and Pacific history.

For more than five decades, Dr. Gough has transformed our understanding of Canada’s past. His scholarship has illuminated the vital role of the sea in shaping the nation, explored the great voyages of exploration that opened North America, examined the evolution of the British Empire and Royal Navy, and chronicled the remarkable individuals whose vision and determination helped build Canada. Through meticulous archival research on three continents and an engaging narrative style, his work has inspired generations of historians, students, and readers.

Few historians have contributed so broadly across Canadian and world history. His publications have become essential reading for anyone seeking to understand British Columbia, the Canadian West, Arctic exploration, the Pacific Coast, naval history, imperial strategy, and the history of exploration.
