The 5th (British Columbia) Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA), is a distinguished Canadian Army Reserve unit based at the historic Bay Street Armoury in Victoria, British Columbia. Established on 12 October 1883 as the British Columbia Provisional Regiment of Garrison Artillery, the regiment has a storied history intertwined with the coastal defence of Victoria and the Esquimalt naval base. Over the years, it has undergone several redesignations, reflecting its evolving roles within Canada’s military framework.

To preserve and honour its rich heritage, the regiment has established the 5th (BC) Artillery Regiment Museum and Archives within the Bay Street Armoury. The museum commemorates the regiment’s role in Victoria’s coastal defence dating back to 1843 and showcases artifacts related to coastal artillery on the Canadian Pacific Coast. Exhibits include field artillery pieces, uniforms, band instruments, medals, weapons, insignia, and photographs, providing a comprehensive overview of the regiment’s contributions from its inception to the present day.

The archives and reference library house a wealth of historical documents, maps, plans, and personal narratives, offering invaluable resources for researchers and history enthusiasts. The museum and archives are typically open to the public on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings, with additional access available by appointment. Visitors are encouraged to explore these collections to gain a deeper understanding of the regiment’s enduring legacy and its pivotal role in both local and national history.

Through these initiatives, the 5th (British Columbia) Field Artillery Regiment not only preserves its storied past but also educates the public, fostering a greater appreciation for its significant contributions to Canada’s military heritage.
